ABOUT SURA KANDIRIAN

Sura Kandirian was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and migrated to Berlin, Germany, at the age of ten. She studied On-Air Design and established a career in media for several years.

In 2017, she relocated to Sydney, Australia, embarking on a transformative journey that fused her professional expertise with a lifelong passion for artistic expression. This pivotal decision represented the convergence of her professional expertise with her deep-rooted passion and introspective thoughts.
Since childhood, Sura has been influenced by diverse cultures and driven by an unrelenting curiosity. Her work explores a wide range of themes, from everyday complexities and socio-political issues to the intricate dynamics of human relationships. Her work subjects the interconnections between privilege, destiny and identity.
By uncovering the mess, chaos and decay of life, she creates a dynamic that disrupts the conventional flow of the world. Each piece interweaves personal and collective hopes, fears and memories, delving into the darker chapters of history to evoke an unsettling atmosphere.
As a contemporary conceptual mixed-media artist, Sura seamlessly navigates digital and analogue mediums. Her experimental approach to new materials allows her to express her concepts in a distinctively individualistic manner.
Her expressive artworks feature rich textures and colours, enhanced by a distinctive glossy finish, adding depth and dimension. Using layering techniques, Sura creates a unique amalgamation of acrylic paint, ink and pigment in layers of Epoxyglass on aluminium, wood or perspex panels. Her analogue work is characterised by the structured use of recycled paper, sewing patterns and various backgrounds on panels.
In an ever-modernising and sometimes turbulent world, her art offers a profound exploration of raw emotion. It poses challenging questions and resembles a wrestling match between affirmation and negation.
